About Shabbir Unwala

Shabbir Unwala is the Founder and Principal of Design Workshop, a practice established in 1989 that is widely recognized for its context-sensitive and structurally innovative approach to architecture. A graduate of the Academy of Architecture (Rachna Sansad), Mumbai, he began his career in the city before moving to Lonavala, where he found his true architectural calling. Over nearly four decades, he has designed an extensive range of projects, including villas, resorts, luxury hotels, hospitals, museums, schools, temples, and public spaces. His design philosophy merges the art of storytelling with the logic of structure, resulting in architecture that is both expressive and deeply responsive to its environment. Shabbir is also known for pioneering the concept of "Diet Buildings," redefining sustainable construction on mountain slopes, with the Machan Resort receiving international recognition from CNN as one of the world's notable ideas for a sustainable future.
